North Merrick is located on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 11,844 at the 2000 census. The name Merrick is taken from "Meroke", the name (meaning peaceful) of the Algonquian tribe formerly indigenous to the area. The North Merrick Fire Department has approximately 85 members using 16 pieces of apparatus located at one station.
The North Merrick Fire Department acquired a foam chemical pumper, because a tremendous amount of oil tankers drive from the south shore to the north shore of Long Island. New York, on Merrick Avenue right through the town of North Merrick. Naturally a precaution, because you can't use water to put out an oil fire!
